The Purple Tang is dark purple with a bright yellow tail and likes to graze on algae throughout the day. They tend to be a little more dominant than other tangs and should be placed in the tank last with dissimilar looking fish. Tangs, or Surgeonfish, are very common in large reef tanks and come in a variety of shapes and colors. Some grow to over 12 inches and swim for miles per day in the ocean, so they need a large aquarium. They are mostly herbivores who graze on algae and seaweed throughout the day and are peaceful with many different fish, however, they may fight with other similar looking tangs unless they are added together while young. Tangs can live 10-20 years or more and should be fed a variety of dry and frozen herbivore foods with supplemental dried seaweed sheets.
